Rules
Flag Football rules have been updated for the 2025 season. The Girls will largely follow the new NFHS rules that will be used by CIF and which eliminated limits on QB runs, the passing clock, and other related rules. Important changes are shown below.
For Boys & Girls:
- The line of scrimmage for the offense is a vertical plane through the point of the ball nearest that team's goal line. The line of scrimmage for the defense is 1 yard beyond the vertical plane through the point of the ball nearest that team's goal line.
- The player in position to receive the snap must be a minimum of 2 yards behind the snapper.
- There are no restrictions on “running up the middle”.
For Girls only:
- Screen blocking is taking position to obstruct the path of an opponent without contacting the opponent with any part of the blocker’s body.
- Blocking by any player is illegal unless it is a screen block.
- After assuming a legal position, a screen blocker may move to maintain legal position by moving in the same direction or path as the opponent. Screen blocking shall take place without initiating contact during the process of the block. A screen blocker shall not extend the arms, or use hands, arms, elbows or legs to initiate contact.
- A defensive player may not:
- Initiate contact with an opponent.
- Initiate contact with an eligible receiver.
divisions
We offer both Girls Flag Football and Boys Flag Football for the below Divisions:
Division 1 = 8th Grade & Below
Division 2 = 6th Grade & Below
NOTES: Students are allowed to play in older divisions, but are prohibited from playing in lower divisions than their age group.
Leagues & Locations
FIYA organizes its leagues geographically for a regular season of approximately 8 games, followed by county-wide playoffs for qualifying D-1 teams. That is, we group school teams together based on their physical location in order to minimize travel. Our league events are also centralized which means our games occur at a location in that league's region which hosts multiple games per day. While exact locations always depend on facility availability, we will do our best to schedule your games as close to your school as possible.
Below is a link which shows addresses for all FIYA Facilities; note however that not all facilities are used for all sports.
