The FIYA Soccer championship games were held Thursday at Frank Parent School.
In the boys game, two time defending champion Monroe took on Century Community Charter. Monroe came out strong looking for the three-peat and took an early 1-0 lead. Century Community would not go down quietly though and rallied for a 2-1 lead and seemed to be in control. Despite the deficit Monroe kept battling and got the equalizer in the second half. The game would go to overtime, where Century Community got a beauty of a goal on a set piece after a Monroe foul, and held on for the last few minutes for their first FIYA championship.
The girls game saw perennial powers Culver City and New West go head to head. New West won the first two FIYA soccer titles and Culver hoped to even the score and defend their 2014 title. It was a well-played game by both sides but Culver proved too good in the end, winning the game to even the championship tally. In four years of FIYA Soccer, the title count is 2-2 between these two great schools. Perhaps 2016 will prove to be the tiebreaker?
